Some are calling the synod on synodality “the greatest consultation effort in human history” and for good reason. It is no small task to listen to the world’s 1.36 billion Catholics, especially when many Catholics have felt marginalized or unwelcome. Taking a cue from this ongoing synodal process, the experts gathered for Reforming the Church: Global Perspectives place the broader issues relating to church reform in their historical context, while exploring themes that have ongoing relevance to the universal church. Topics include ecclesial transfiguration and the episcopacy, clerical sex abuse, globalization of the church, and the theology of synodality. A number of chapters address issues of more local, or culturally-specific, significance, in this way mirroring the results of synodal consultations conducted worldwide. What emerges is a reflection on the theme of reform within the church: what it has meant in the past, what it means for us now, and what it might mean in the future. Bellitto Shaun Blanchard Agnès Desmazières Massimo Faggioli Francis Gonsalves, SJ Julia Knop Bishop Vincent Long, OFMConv Rafael Luciani Declan Marmion Ethna Regan Pedro Trigo, SJ

This volume of essays adopts a multi-faceted approach to questions surrounding dying and death. It features contributions from those working within the areas of palliative care, healthcare chaplaincy, philosophy, and theology. Among the topics covered are: the transformative power of palliative care; spiritual care at the end of life; a philosophical perspective on dying, death, and dignity; prudential judgment in end-of-life decision making; perinatal death; compassionate accompaniment of the bereaved; honoring the sacred story of the dying; reflecting on the Order of Christian Funerals; scriptural perspectives on mortality; the significance of music in the funeral liturgy; how the afterlife has been imagined within the Christian tradition; and the 'liturgy' of the Irish Wake. With questions for further discussion and reflection at the end of each chapter, all who wish to think more deeply about issues surrounding dying, death, and the care of the terminally ill, will find this collection timely and thought-provoking.

This volume takes its cue from the theme of the International Eucharistic Congress to be held in Dublin in June 2012, 'Communion with Christ and with one another'. In almost eighty short articles, a host of leading scholars from the worlds of history, liturgy, theology, philosophy, art history and Celtic Studies reflect upon aspects of the history of the Christian tradition in Ireland from the fifth to the twenty-first century, with a special emphasis on the relationship between the Irish people and the Eucharist. This is a wide-ranging illustrated collection which draws from the major Christian denominations in Ireland and includes entries on significant people, texts, images and events that have shaped the Irish Christian experience.

Fr John-Paul Sheridan presents Pope Francis with a box set of all three volumes of 'Treasures of Irish Christianity'. This follows mass in Casa Santa Marta with Fr Sheridan's ordination class to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of their ordination. The third volume of 'Treasures of Irish Christianity' will be published in the next few weeks, and we are also pleased to announce that we will have a limited number of box sets for sales, containing all three volumes. This third volume of Treasures of Irish Christianity looks at 'the Irish abroad' from the earliest centuries to the present day, with a special emphasis on the historical contribution of Irish missionaries. Topics include a seventeenthcentury Church of Ireland clergyman's account of being captured by North African pirates; the Irish priest who debated with the American abolitionist John Brown before his execution in 1859; Irish military chaplains in the First World War; the Irish missionary who met Mao Tse-tung, and much more. Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume III follows in the wake of the highly successful Treasures of Irish Christianity Volumes I and II, which were published to great acclaim in 2012 and 2013 respectively. This third volume is also richly illustrated.

Where is God in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic? This volume offers a variety of reflections from the perspectives of theology, scripture, philosophy, ethics, liturgy, pastoral, and canon law.   The chapters are addressed to anyone seeking understanding, whatever the level of faith. The book will be helpful for those in parish ministry and interested laypersons, especially in the Irish context. Besides being valuable for personal reading, the volume is also a welcome resource for parish councils or small parish groups, because each chapter concludes with questions for reflection and discussion. This book seeks to offer the beginnings of a theological reflection that will doubtless take years to complete.  Contributors to the volume include Tom Casey SJ, Anne Codd PBVM, Pádraig Corkery, Jeremy Corley, Philip Gonzales, Michael Hurley, Gaven Kerr, Nóirín Lynch, Michael Mullaney, Neil Xavier O’Donoghue, Kevin O’Gorman SMA, Noel O’Sullivan, Jessie Rogers, Salvador Ryan, and Michael Shortall. The volume also includes an interview on the pandemic originally given to the Tablet by Pope Francis.

The preparation of new priests for ministry currently faces closer scrutiny than at any time since the Reformation, and the importance of effective priestly formation has perhaps never been clearer in the entire history of the Church. In Models of Priestly Formation, some of the world's leading experts on the topic consider priestly formation since Vatican II, explore current best practices internationally, and imagine what the future of such formation might look like. The book promises to become an essential reference for every person involved in priestly formation and for anyone interested in understanding better how it is carried out and how those who do it think about their task. The eBook edition includes four additional essays.

Remembering the Reformation - Martin Luther and Catholic Theology (Hardcover): Declan Marmion, Salvador Ryan, Gesa E. Thiessen Remembering the Reformation - Martin Luther and Catholic Theology (Hardcover)

The dramatic unfolding of events after Martin Luthers revolutionary act led to the ultimate, and seemingly irreparable, fissure with Roman Catholicism: excommunication and schism. Remembering the Reformation enters into this history and pursues a more nuanced reading of Luthers relationship with the Catholic tradition, from his Augustinian roots and medieval training to his reading of scripture and investigations of ecclesiology, as well as his continued relevance and challenge to Catholic theology. An international consortium of scholars, Catholic and Protestant, contribute to this volume and provide a thoughtful reimagining of Luther.

Devotional Cultures of European Christianity, 1790 - 1960 (Paperback, New): Henning Laugerud, Salvador Ryan Devotional Cultures of European Christianity, 1790 - 1960 (Paperback, New)
Henning Laugerud, Salvador Ryan
R840 Discovery Miles 8 400 Out of stock

This volume takes as its theme the devotional cultures of European Christianity, from the dawn of the French Revolution to that later revolution which was the Second Vatican Council. At one level, it deals with what might be called, in devotional terms, a 'long nineteenth century.' The collection is divided into three parts. The first is composed of five essays that explore the theme of spiritual and devotional renewal in Norway, Ireland, Italy, and France. The second part examines questions pertaining to devotional culture in the arts, with specific studies related to aspects of sacred music, iconography, and architecture. The final part addresses the use of devotional instruments - respectively, hymnody and religious emblems - to identify individuals and groups over and against a specified 'other, ' whether that 'other' be in 1850s England, 1930s Spain, or 1970s Belfast. Many of the contributions were first presented as papers at a five-day workshop for the European Network on the Instruments of Devotion (ENID), held at St. Patrick's College, Thurles, Ireland, which culminated in an international conference on "The Material Culture of Catholic Devotion, c.1850-c.1950" in January 2008. *** .."..well-researched and stimulating collection of scholarly essays on European devotional currents that will be of interest to scholars and students alike." - Catholic Historical Review, July 201
